Please consider the environment and take action – here are some actions that you can assist us with;
TAKE ACTION – RUN CLEAN – DO NOT LITTER
Please DO NOT LITTER by just dropping your water / energy sachet/s in the road or on the pavement, the race will be providing many ‘Chuck Zones’ and ‘GARBIE BINS’. Please be on the look-out for one and dispose of your sachet in the bins provided, or carry the sachet till you can throw it away.
- Throw your used water and energy sachets in the “GARBIE BINS” provided
- Carry your litter with you or Carry your own water (where possible) in a hydration pack or a water bottle belt
TAKE ACTION – #CHALLENGEOTHERS
Please encourage your fellow runners to support our “Run Clean” campaign. If we stand together we can make a real difference.
TAKE ACTION – MEASURE AND OFF-SET YOUR TRAVEL “CARBON” FOOTPRINT
Your carbon impact is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which are induced by your activities in a given time frame. You are now able to ESTIMATE your “carbon” impact and sponsor a Greenpop tree which supports our climate neutral initiates. We have a custom made application ( brought to you by Sanlam) where all Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Runners are able to estimate their negative “carbon” impact and pledge to sponsor a tree to make a positive impact CLICK HERE for link.
Due to the severe drought affecting the Western Cape, we encourage all runners to be aware of water wastage and thank you for your care, consideration, and understanding in taking the pledge to be waterwise. All participants will receive communications prior to the event to ensure that they fully understand the severity of the crisis and we will provide practical tips on what they can do to reduce their impact.
OUR CLIMATE NEUTRAL STATUS:

ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL PROGRAMME
We achieved 100% zero waste to landfill, becoming one of the first events in the world who achieved this. We achieved this by
- Sorting all our waste at source
- Reduced contamination
- Increase focus on recyclable waste (glass; paper & cardboard; cans; metal lids; HD; LD; PET; polyprop; metal etc)
The types of categories of waste were:
- General & ORGANIC waste – 4 tons .
The organic waste was converted into agri-protein and the general waste was converted to bio-gas.
- Recycled waste – 736 tons
The recycling waste was sorted into 9 recycling categories and then taken to the relevant recycling plants.
