Friday, 01 February 2019 marks the opening of entries for Africa’s only IAAF Gold Label status marathon, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has made incredible progress since its relaunch in 2014. In 2018 it was again awarded Gold Label status by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Later that year it obtained the coveted Sports Industry 2018 Mass Participation Event of the year and was voted event of the year by Runners World. In 2018 it was also named as an official qualifier for the inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings.
“We’re excited to kick off the opening of entries of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 2019 event” says Janet Welham, Race Director. “We encourage runners of all ages (male and female) to run in and celebrate the magnificence of the City of Cape Town. The 42.2km route highlights iconic landmarks and boasts spectacular views whilst bringing you the GEES of Cape Town”.
Welham continued, “In 2018, the event attracted more than 23 000 runners from over 80 countries. For runners this is more than a race, it is a chance to make a difference, a chance to make your run more meaningful. We are encouraging runners to take up the challenge and run for a charity of their choice.”
Race ambassador Elana van Zyl-Meyer says, “We strive to deliver an internationally recognized world class event whilst at the same time protecting our environment, creating an amazing experience for the runners, having a positive impact on the community and the City of Cape Town”. Van Zyl-Meyer went on to say, “To date the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has enjoyed the attention of both local and international elite athletes with Stephen Mokoka, South Africa’s top marathon runner, taking the top honors in a record time of 2:08:31 in 2018. The Gold Label status is a drawcard for elite athletes from around the world, maintaining Gold is of vital importance in keeping The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as the ‘must run’ event in Africa, and we are proud to be a qualifying event for the inaugural #AbbottWMMRankings.”
Tim Hadzima, Executive Director of Abbott World Marathon Majors says, “We are very excited about the response to the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings from marathons around the world. More than 125,000 runners aged 40+ participate in AbbottWMM races each year and this new system will allow even more runners to become a part of the AbbottWMM family. Our system gives runners a chance to run all over the world and all across the calendar on a truly global stage. We want to give them a chance to gain recognition like never before.”
The weekend-long running festival begins on Saturday 14th September 2019 with two Peace Trail Runs (22km and 12km) and a 5km PEACE Run. This is followed by a 10km Peace Run and the classic 42.2km City Marathon which both take place on Sunday 15th September 2019.
Africa is my home, this is my race. It’s Cape Town, must run it!
